Bud, if the world does end (which is likely won't, it will just be a dramatic shift in power), I may still be a virgin, and I have 7 years on you.

You might wanna make sure you get laid before that date in that case. Just in case.

I'd like to say nothing, and that's probably what will happen.

However the date is from a Mayan calendar signalling the end of the 5th age, that's a bit worrying because the Mayan's were bloody good at calendars in general - it was kind of a racial/tribal specialty if you like, from calendars predicting pregnancy trimesters to calendars that were far more accurate for astral prediction (not horroscopes but astronomy).

There is also the strong possibility of a peak in solar flaring, and the reversal of magnetic poles around that date, which is worth bearing in mind.

However those connected to the Mayan belief system, insist that this is not a date for catastrophe but the beginning of a major (and potentially non-catastrophic) change for mankind.

I don't think anything will happen, but hey..it'd been fun if something actually did happen.

Come to think of it, something probably will happen, something minor. There's always someone who would think that it'd be fun to make people believe that something actually did happen.

Everyone was going berserk in 1999 because the same kind of shit was prophesied. Nothing happened. I still don't understand why hysteria and conspiracy is being influenced by the ending of some long dead civilization's calender. In 1999 North America had this paranoia that the world was going to end and there were similar prophecies. However in Chinese culture they were celebrating this time as "The year of the Golden Dragon" all im saying is that we should probably base our fears on the predictions and prophecies of our own cultures and not the cultures of someone else.

Well, this may be culturally inaccurate but since it's about theories, here it goes:

Well the Mayan calendar ends in 2012, wich is little more than 2 years from now, wich lead to the tought of the end of the world as we know it, but when you think of it, where was the mayans originary from? they were from what we call now Mexico. What is happening nowdays that's capable of killing everyone in our planet? where did it started? Well, my thoughts are that in 2 years the H1N1 would have already spread to the majority of people, leading to a total anialathion. It started in Mexico, and Mayans fortold it, so by the end of 2012 we'll all be dead.

Hurraaaaaaaaay!

The doomsday prediction is based on only one of many calendars used by the Mayans, the Mesoamerican calendar and did not originate with the Mayan,
The "fact" that doomsday will occur in 2012 is fabricated and the Mayans themselves never said anything about doomsday when the cycle ends. Basically the calendar system was just a clever way to keep track and measure dates over periods longer than 52 years.

As usual someone will take this way too serious and tragedies will happen because of this...

What people should be more concerned about is that a asteroid will miss the earth by 25,600 km (within the orbits of communications satellites) in 2029, but its orbit will be altered unpredictably in a way which does not rule out a collision on April 13 or 14, 2036 or later in the century. These possible future dates have a cumulative probability of 1 in 45,000 for an impact in the 21st century.

Right now this seems to be the most likely way doomsday will occur and the chances is microscopic....

Just because the Mayan calendar ends on 12/21/2012 doesn't mean the world will. For all we know there could be a large chunk of it missing
