| Well, I'm not sure where to start with this band. They've got some amazing riffs. They've got an amazing bass player aswell. (Sean Malone) However, the 'breakdowns' annoy me. I'm also not a big fan of the vocals at time's. But, they're a really good overall Tech. Death Metal band. My favorite song is Celestial Voyage and Focus. |

| Yeah, the vocals can be annoying at times, but they do know how to create some very atmospheric music | |

| haha there arnt really many places to start as the only have have 2 albums.
Definately go for Focus, their classic 90's album. I found last years traced in air to be good, but i guess it left me a little disapointed. |

| I dunno if I posted them in the right spot or not. But uhh yeah Cynic these days are now progressive with a little touch of death metal (just vocals). They were death metal, then death metal fusion on Focus and before that they were pure thrash metal. So what are your thoughts on this incredible band? I'm gonna listen to 'em now. |

| Old Cynic > new Cynic, but that said - their new album isn't bad at all. |

| The new album is billiant, yeah its a completely different style to the demo's and has lyrics about not particularly depressing things but i would say its a really nice stab in a new direction. | |

| What do you think about Portal, side project of cynic's solist, guitarist and drummer? I think they are great, but many people called it "shit" because it's prog rock, i think it's wrong. About Cynic... Good experimentation music) |

| Focus is great, but you really need to track down their demo material. The 1990 demo is a classic. Should be easy to find this stuff with all the download blogs around these days. | |

| Really enjoyed Focus, picked it around the same time as Death's 'Human' (ironic, well not really but there is some link) and those two albums were played pretty much constant for like 3 months.
Veil Of Maya is one of my all time favourite 'starter's to an album'. |

About Cynic... Good experimentation music) I have a digital copy of the post-Cynic band Portal, and I agree, it is excellent progressive rock. Too bad nothing more came of Portal.

I remember hearing their 91' demo ages ago and it was like a different band, a hell of a lot thrashier with no robot voices.

| They should be in progressive metal I think...
Anyway, love everything, including the new album and the demos.
I would pay a lot of money to see them if they would headline a tour through North America.

| I dunno, they kinda do progressive in traced in air, halfway death metal halfway prog metal in focus, and thrash in the demos.
Just pick one. | |

| Cynic is what I call progressive metal, like Atheist, Pestilence, Death. These bands played really complicated, atmospheric and progressive music, not like nowadays "progressive-wannabe" "metal" bands, who think that adding keyboard to their music makes them "progressive". |
