| They're a tech-death band from Canada. I really love their first two albums, especially the second one. The Erosion of Sanity is a fuckin' masterpiece. You must get it if you're into tech-death. In my opinion, they come really close to Atheist as far as technicality is concerned. They're an ultra creative band and they're back too! They were disbanded after their last drummer hanged himself. They'll be back with a new drummer, since they've gone through other drummers in the past. |

| Obscura is a masterpiece, proud to say Canada has produced some of the most technical and insanely creative death metal bands | |

| All of Gorguts' releases are masterpieces. "Obscura" is by far THE strangest DM album ever written, but it's just so damn original and awesome. | |

| Orphans of Sickness fucking slays everything and Obscura changed my life. I remember trying to learn the tab to Nostalgia a few years ago and I felt like a chimp. Anyone ever notice that it's sort of a concept album too? | |

| Well the vocabulary is dense and the grammar is weird (cause the Gorguts guys are VERY French French-Canadians and I'm assuming Luc wrote the lyrics) so I might have this a little wrong. But I'll try.
Essentially, the album is about a man who reaches a pinnacle of spiritual despair and ends his life in pursuit of a transcendent state. Throughout the early tracks flesh is treated as a sort of prison most suited toward anguish and suffering, a deluding cage for the soul. The narrator seeks the mind that is without body.
There are also lyrics in songs that refer directly to others (Faceless Ones is referenced in Rapturous Grief for instance).
The concept can most easily be summarized by the title "La Vie Est Prelude... (La Morte Orgasme)" (Life is the prelude, death is the climax [orgasm, or: the ultimate consequence, 'goal', of all life is death].)
The narrator, after death, encounters 'faceless' entities and utter darkness, oblivion, obscura; the narrator becomes one of these faceless ones, perhaps nothing more than a metaphor for all things dead: left to the emptiness of the cold and unforgiving cosmos.
It fits that Sweet Silence ends with a casketlike noise that becomes slower and slower. There are also melodic motifs that cross between tracks. I can't remember for sure, but I think a portion of one of the themes in Nostalgia is permutated into one of the main riffs in Subtle Bodies. Don't quote me on that one.
Also: I always forget this album has detuned violins. | |

| I pretty much love all of their albums. The first two the most. One of my friends was first exposed to this band through "Obscura" and hated it cause he said it was annoying, but he eventually listened to their earlier stuff and likes it. Now he refers to those albums as, "when Gorguts was good". | |
