| their new album is meh, ive given it a listen. it did nothing to me. some people might like it, i agree, but tbh, i diddnt like it at all...there was nothing "special" in it that makes it stand out, if you know what i mean. |

| Wow, so much criticism. Whatever, to each his own...
I think Mastodon is one of those few bands that truly stand out for awesome musicianship and pure badassery. "Blood Mountain" and "Crack the Skye" have to be my favorite releases so far. The latter to me is just....unreal
EDIT: Not to mention that their contribution to the "Aqua Teen Hunger Force Movie" Soundtrack was hilariously badass

| I've sort of grown away from Mastodon lately. I'd like to say it's beacuse I'm digesting a bunch of other crunchy watcha', but honestly, I fear the move owes to my standards rising. Blood Mountain will always be a great record, the the two surrounding it on the timeline less awesome, and the one before that quite tasty in it's own right, but I think I'm just sort of past them or something. 'Cut You Up With A Linoleum Knife' still reigns supreme for self aware absurdist metal what-have-you found on a film's soundtrack, though. | |

i stand corrected i checked out "Crack the Skye" properly this time, listened to it once, twice, three times, and even more, and i really love it the guitar work isnt bad and i think it just takes a few listens to settle in the choruses are awesome and the lyrics get you thinking |

| I find people just put the "progressive" label on bands hard to pinpoint. Dream Theater is a progressive metal band..... and I find no similarities whatsoever in terms of genre between them and Mastodon.
But like I said... what the fuck do I know?

| Gay.
Early Mastodon was reasonably 'progressive' in that they used odd time signatures and changed time signatures quite regularly.
I saw them support Tool a few years ago and they were awful, although it was a shit venue. I like a few of their songs but not enough to buy full albums.
