| So as this year is drawing to it's end. What is your top ten albums for this year?
post em up people, i don't think much more is comming out before the new year. Feel free to leave a comment for each album of your thoughts about it.
For me, in no particular order
GriftegÄrd - Solemn, Sacred Severe - A big suprise first time i've heard it. Got stuck right from the beggining and now after giving it quite many spins i can confirm it as a pure emotional masterpiece of doom.
November's Doom - Into Nights Infernal Requiem - Actually better then the first one.
Fatum Elisum - Fatum Elisum Depressive 90's style death doom in amazing form.
Semlah - Semlah - 9/10 Another band that came for nowhere and blew me away, greattraditional/epic doom
The Prophecy - Into The Light - Their best album to date , awesome riffs and vocals
Autumnia - O'Funeralia - - Dowm tempo melancholic death doom goodness, a great trip all the way through
Candlemass - Death Magic Doom - Candlemass can do no wrong. this time for a better turn then the last album imo
Tribulation - The Horror - old school death metal at it's best.
Wolf - Ravenous - Wolf strikes again with some great straight forward true heavy metal, second best by them.
Heaven and Hell - The Devil You Know - Iommi + Dio + 2009 = masterpiece
Tales of Dark - Perdition Calls - Gothic Death doom beauty
Can't reeally be sure about this list as 10 album are quite few, but nyway this is somehow correct for me.

| Here's my top 10 (so far) for 2009:
1. November's Doom - Into Night's Requiem Infernal If someone told me a year ago a doom/death band should top my list for 2009, I would think they were outta their minds...this album is brilliant in every possible way.
2. Alice In Chains - Black Gives Way To Blue Layne? Who? Seriously...the strongest contender to be the soundtrack of my life for the year 2009. Fucked Up, Insecure, Neurotical, Emotional. F.I.N.E. Damn fine is the album too....
3. Heaven & Hell - The Devil You Know Gods of doom strikes again....let's hope they will again. Get well Ronnie!
4. Ancient Cross - Ancient Cross I know...this is just a re-release of a really overlooked album from 2006. I hold over half the plays this band have on Last.fm...that's how much I love this album.
5. Candlemass - Death Magic Doom Believe me. This album would been the top album the last 3 or 4 years if it had been released before. This show how awesome the best albums have been this year. Definitive their best one since Nightfall, imo.
6. Kiss - Sonic Boom It's a personal issue. OK? It's been going on for 28 years....it's like a bad habit you can't kick...
7. W.A.S.P. - Babylon Just solid stuff as always from Blackie...
8. Ace Frehley - Anomaly Ace is back and he told you so!
9. Wolf - Ravenous Kick ass! Straigh Forward! Full throttle! This album is just for pleasure...nothing else!
10. Saxon - Into the Labyrinth You've heard this album a thousand times, you can hear it a thousand more... | |

| random order
ABSU - Absu not really into their earlier stuff but boy is this great or what? flows so well and it`s catchy as fuck
ANAAL NATHRAKH - In the Constellation of the Black Widow these guys just keep getting better and better with every release and this is def their best so far..love the epicness and catchiness at the same time
TRIBULATION - The Horror great debut, good from the very first track til the last one
WOLF - Ravenous a very nice surprise, havent heard them before but got hooked by this album already from the first listen
EAGLE TWIN - The Unkindness of Crows id have to make another list for all the good doom/stoner/sludge albums this year..but i like this one a lot
GOROD - Process of a New Decline good that someone still knows how to play good tech dm
BLUT AUS NORD - Memoria Vetusta II - Dialogue with the Stars the French scene has some killer bands, and Blut aus Nord is one of them...the new Peste Noire could also be in this place
DRUDKH - Microcosmos the more i listen to it the more i like it..Drudkh have never disappointed me and this is a fine example of atmospheric bm at its best
GOD DETHRONED - Passiondale why do good ol` dm bands make better releases than most of the new dm bands? oh right, cuz they kick ass!
REVOCATION - Existence is Futile death/thrash that i still cant get enough of. dunno why.
there are A LOT of other albums worth mentioning...overall this year in metal has been pretty good |

| In no particular order:
Amesoeurs - Amesoeurs This one actually is my album of the year. It can be atmospheric, catchy, emotional, soft, harsh and overall is beautifully dark. It justaposes so many elements well and creates a sound that is worth much more than the sum of its parts. I might go as far as to call it France's greatest black metal release. Something Neige did had to be, anyways.
Sunn O))) - Monoliths & Dimensions I think this is really the epitome of Sunn O)))'s studio albums thus far. The songs feature a lot of subtle evolution and creates a more dynamic dark atmosphere than the band has ever produced before. The addition of Attila's vocals and the fantastic use of orchestral elements underline the pieces awesomely.
The Mountain Goats - The Life of the World to Come I don't think I've heard a bad Mountain Goats album, yet. Though not my favorite of their releases, it still is packed full of great songs that only John Darnielle could have written. His brilliant lyrics highlighted with perfectly fitting folky tones is always a winning formula and "Psalms 40:2" is easily one of the bands greatest songs yet.
Lightning Bolt - Earthly Delights This album really brings out many of Lightning Bolt's best elements; energetic noise rock that can evolve subtly and fuck with your mind quite well while ensnaring you in its intense sound.
Black Pyramid - Black Pyramid Awesome doom/stoner release. There are moments that feel as if Om and High on Fire joined together, forming an evolved version of Sleep. Though not quite as good as those stoner legends, it still proves to be an awesome release in the genre.
Tyondai Braxton - Central Market I've actually only been getting into this one lately. An amazing blend of classical style with experimentation that could only occur in this modern age. It reminds me of Frank Zappa a fair bit in the way they introduce unconventional instruments and themes to the genre without making them a gimmick or a liability. Reminding me of Frank Zappa earns tremendous points alone.
Oranssi Pazuzu - Muukalainen Puhuu Amazing combination of black metal, psychedelia and progressive rock. The combination has been done before, but they're able to blatantly express each element without sacrificing any of the qualities that make them great by themselves. Really fun to listen to.
Neon Indian - Psychic Chasms Yes, this one was hyped a lot in the hipster community, but I can't help loving it. It's just so trippy and discordant while remaining catchy. This feels like an overload of acid-laced cotton candy and I love every minute of it.
Wolves in the Throne Room - Black Cascade It's Wolves in the Throne Room, do I really need to say anything? They've been up to their usual great balck metal/post-rock combination and haven't dulled a bit!
Tombs - Winter Hours Great sludgy post-hardcore stuff. It can feel desolate and crushing or crowded an noisy Sometimes even both. It's title invokes appropriate cold imagery as the song can feel like a blizzard or a hailstorm with few brief moments of light snow. Such a nice cold release without having to be black metal.

| I think Sore Eros - Second Chants may replace the Wolves pick on that list. It appears to be getting less and less metal by the day, haha. This is the first year that I've really expanded to find the non-metal releases, though and keep up with as much as a variety as possible. I've been digging the non-metal output quite a bit more this year, though there are many fantastic metal releases as well, particularly black metal. | |
