| Industrial metal pioneers Godflesh founded in 1988 by Justin Broadrick and G.C. Green in Birmingham, UK. They drew influences from early power electronics and industrial music, threw in a some noise rock, ambient sounds and topped it off with a drum machine, which was credited on albums as "Machines". In 1989 they released their landmark "Streetcleaner", combining slow grindcoresque landscapes with the harsh and pummeling drum machine. I'll copy a part of a review from Metal-Archives which describes the album perfectly: " I was convinced that the brutal death metal I’d been listening to quite a bit of would be heavier, for instance. Well, the first thing I learned when I put in Streetcleaner is just what industrial is, and just how heavy this music is. I was expecting heaviness in a Dying Fetus like raging sense. What I got was the opposite." " The drumming is one of the key aspects of the album. It’s a drum machine, and it sounds utterly and completely artificial. It couldn’t sound less human if it was a truly randomized pattern." This is still one of the most "cold" and "bleak" albums ever recorded, and a personal favourite Their career spanned seven full length studio albums, numerous EP's, singles and compilation appearances. Godflesh broke up in 2002, and Broadrick went ahead and formed Jesu, named after the last song on their swansong album, Hymns. In November 2009, Broadrick announced a reunion show for the Hellfest 2010 festival featuring the original "lineup": Broadrick, Green and "Machines". Godflesh Metal-ArchivesOfficial fansite
