| I finally got around to checking out Nightrage today. I grabbed their latest release Wearing a Martyr's Crown. I gave it two full spins today and I must say it's damn good MeloDeath. I also grabbed Sweet Vengeance their debut full length. I'll give that one a listen tonight or tomorrow. | |

| This band would be so much better if they could be a bit more ambitious with their structures and drop some of the 50 year old Swedish melodeath cliches. I found that the first album got worse as it went on, but that the second and fourth albums held my attention and were a bit more involved.
Melodeath needs a serious facelift, and I'm wondering if the swedes have it in them to write away from the metalcore sound that they are unfortunately the progenitors of (esp At the Gates, members of which are featured here). Anata's the best band working in this field today, I think, so my standards are set kinda high.
I can probably listen to Descent into Chaos and Martyr's Crown quite a few more times, but I'm definitely not going anywhere near Sweet Vengeance ever again.

Yeah, that metalcore shit is a real pain in the ass. I know what you mean and I agree with you on some levels, though I like the old-school stuff. The melodeath needs something new but I'm not sure of what. Anyway if you haven't heard The Absence I truly recommend them to you cause I find them to be full of innovativeness though still keeping it melodeath (no metalcore involved)
