How you started listening to Metal

Name explains itself.

For me, a couple of years back I had just started in a new school. I started hanging out with the class (and probably schools) only metalhead and we soon became good friends. At recess he used to lend me his mp3, and he had everything from cheesy power metal to raw black metal on that thing. At first I was repelled by most stuff, but at the same time intrigued and I didn't turn the thing off as soon as I heard "screaming". Haha, I remember how I always listened to his mp3 on every recess, interested in what he'd put on this time.
Before I knew it he started sharing music with me, lending me albums and sending them via the computer. And by then I pretty much loved it all.

So how about you guys? What's your story? I know we all started somewhere.

My Dad was a headbanger in the 80's, he introduced me to a lot of music.

One day, in 6th grade, I took my sister's mp3 to my school, I listened to some of the tracks..she had Metallica's black album's Nothing Else Matters and other stuff...
Next there were some Maiden songs like Fear Of The Dark, Aces High and more stuff..

One day I went to the web and heard those songs, from that It went to Glam Metal, Heavy Metal, Power Metal, Folk Metal..then finally Speed and Thrash metal and then Black..Death...and finally Grindcore and Goregrind.

For me, around 1988 I was walking around a record store and saw the cassette of "...and Justice for All" by Metallica. I thought the cover looked col so I bought the tape. A week later I bought all of Metallica's albums on cassette and I haven't looked back.

From the Grand Theft Auto : Vice City VROCK radio station some years ago, I remember that this was my favourite radio in the game next to the FLASH FM and a little FEVER 105.

Kind of a progression I guess, my dad really steered me through things when I was younger he used to listen to old '60s music Beatles, Rolling Stones, The Who, Simon and Garfunkel etc. then he introduced me to Blues which i still like, also played some more classical music and then kind of went into listening to punk by myself then progressed on to metal when I heard Enter Sandman and So What by Metallica. Non-stop metal since.

Some years ago i saw a Rey Mysterio highlight video on youtube and it had the song King Nothing. I loved that song and downloaded it on Limewire. Then i got some more Metallica... Iron Maiden and Primal Fear soon followed. That's how i started.

A friend of mine-who wasn't really a metalhead, strangely-had a CD full of songs of various genres, among them was Maiden's "Fear of the Dark" and Metallica's "The Unforgiven", then I heard some Opeth which got me into Death Metal (Though I was originally repulsed by it at first), then it went on to Slayer, Megadeth, Behemoth, Vader (all thanks to the net), so yeah, that's how I got into metal

I've always been into metal, ever since I heard it at an extremely young age, hell even in the womb. Metal is one of my biggest passions ever. I started listening to it when I was 10. For my 10th b-day, my cousins gave me a couple CDs as gifts. Metallica's Master of Puppets and Pearl Jam's Ten. Guess which one I favored more...

This really surprised my cousins and they thought I wouldn't like it. They figured I'd be into Pearl Jam, since that's their favorite band of all-time. By the 2000's, I got more absorbed into metal and it is the music I identify with the most.

I've been listening to metal since i remember, my father and my older sister were listening to it, and they taught me to listen to it. I've started with Venom, Iron Maiden (my favourite Wickerman), Black Sabbath and Gamma Ray. Then my sister moved out, and I've started to search for bands myself, and this way i discovered almost everything I listen to now.

I started listening to hard rock/ heavy metal during the summer vacation of 1981, when I roamed through my dad's record collection. In between crappy C&W, Swedish "dansband" and other shitty music I found some music that appealed to me in a way that no other kind of music had done before.

The bands I discovered was Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Rainbow and Nazareth. Unaware at the time that those bands somehow was connected and played more or less the same type of music. Later the same summer I was introduced to the exciting and "dangerous" world of Kiss

My Uncle was playing Screaming For Vengeance one day when I was at his house. I was hooked from then on.

I had a channel called Music Kingdom on Hotbird sat.
They used to play videos of various heavy metal and death, thrash acts.
Many videos portayed blood, violence and death. I liked the music, the heavier it was, the more interesting. I remember watching Cannibal Corpse's Devoured by Vermin..I wanted to watch it again. Then I asked my neighbour..he gave me some Black Sabbath, ACDC, KISS.
After that, I discovered more and more music on the internet and favoured extreme metal. Yep, thats pretty much the story.

That's a pretty good way to get into the genre Ron.
