The Mountain Goats

For those who don't know, the Mountain Goats are a fantastic indie/folk group that's mostly worked with lo-fi recording until around 2002.

I've been obsessed with these guys for the latter half of this year. John Darnielle is a fantastic songwriter and lyricist. He's also a big metalhead and writes the South Pole Dispatch thing that always closes Decibel magazine. I have not listened to an album of theirs that I haven't loved yet and Tallahassee is at the top of my album list in the entire decade. Lots of great material that can be depressing, hilarious or both with a sincerity that few bands display.



Here's a video of them performing "The Best Ever Deat Metal Band Out of Denton" as the final encore for their recent performance at the TLA in Philly (which I attended).

Anyone else listen to these guys?

Brilliant band. John darneile is a legend.
I've seen em live twice now, both great shows. at the first one i made friends with the girl behind the bar cause we were the only metal fans in the place and she got me backstage after for a quick chat.
Second show John was talking between songs about eyehategod (i fucking love eyehategod, i have an eyehategod tattoo on my leg) so that was awesome and he finished the set with "Best ever death metal band out of denton".
